No Doubt's Biggest Little Fan

I am writing to recognize your and No Doubt’s biggest fan.

Lacey Noel was born on December 24th, 1996. (Knowing Lacey now, I figure she decided to come a month premature because she heard there would be Christmas presents.)

As with any premature baby there were complications. She was delivered via emergency c-section and immediately the doctors realized she had an abnormally low blood count. After a short stay for observation the doctors gave a diagnosis of anemia of which she would grow out. She was released to go home with her very scared, yet very happy single mother. Unfortunately her problems could not be out grown, not long after her homecoming, she became very lethargic, could not hold her head up, and could hardly cry. A trip to the doctor confirmed something was very wrong, and her pediatrician sent them immediately to the emergency room. Doctors were waiting at the doors of the ER. It turned out, that Lacey’s little body was completely unable to produce red blood cells and she needed an immediate transfusion the quickest way possible. Doctors shaved her head in an attempt to directly connect the IV to the veins in her skull, but they were too weak to accept the needle. In a last resort the doctors purposely broke her ankle to reach a strong vein hidden there. This was to be her first of many blood transfusions. The new diagnosis was that Lacey had Diamond Blackfan Anemia, which left her with no ability to generate or make her own red blood cells. Lacey would be sent to nearby Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for treatment. In her first few months, she'd had bone marrow biopsies, numerous blood transfusions, and week long stays at the hospital. Blood transfusions take an entire day on a little baby, and the blood only lasted a short time. It seemed that her body was going through it so fast. After a few more months, and a few more infections, the doctors realized that her ability to make white blood cells was beginning to fade as well. Hospital visits and stays now included blood transfusions, and isolation, so that she could be kept safe. In order to come home, Lacey would have to be given daily injections from her mother, to stimulate her bone marrow in hopes that she'd start to generate red blood cells and increase her white cells. Her body just didn't react well, and there was no way to predict when she would be sick, need blood, or some other test. She was in the hospital more than she was home, and she was not getting any better. Her body was too small to withstand all of the infections, and her doctor determined that at 10 months old, she'd need a bone marrow transplant. Final diagnosis - Severe Aplastic Anemia.

Lacey prepared for her transplant with radiation and chemotherapy to kill off all of the existing bone marrow, to make room for the new. She was a fighter through the whole thing, and kept on smiling!!! Her chance of survival was 30%, being so young made it very risky. On October 16th, 1997, Lacey Noel received her second chance at life. Lacey is twelve now. Though there have been a few scares, she is healthy and strong.

It is hard to recognize Lacey without also recognizing her mother.

Missy found out she was pregnant with Lacey at sixteen years old. The arms holding, nursing, loving the sick child storied above weren’t those of an experienced adult, but of a seventeen year old child. Missy was a die-hard No Doubt fan from the moment they hit the air waves. Truth be know, Lacey has been listening to the band since before she was born. During Lacey’s stays in the hospital, Missy’s only tie to the outside world was ND’s music. It kept her young, hip, and kept her from breaking under the pressure. As soon as she was able, Lacey started putting in ND CDs by herself. (Did you know it’s actually possible to wear out a CD from playing it too much? I do now.) Once Lacey was well, Missy actually got to meet the band twice. About two years ago Missy passed the crown of “Biggest Fan” down to Lacey. Now Lacey dreams of the day she’ll meet the band.

Lacey has over 20 of Harajuku Lovers purses, a closet full of Harajuku Lovers clothing, all the toys, books, albums, you name it. Her iPod is in constant ND/Gwen mode and sings them all by heart.

No Doubt is a huge inspiration to both my girls and from the bottom of my heart I thank you. You get them both through hard times and give them both joy.

Hopefully this will get to you before the shows we will be attending. I know it’s a bit much to expect her to meet the band, but if you could PLEASE give a shout to “Lacey Noel” at either the Dallas, Texas or the Houston, Texas show (because she’ll be at both) it would make her life.
